Course Structure and Content

The rapid development of computer graphics technology over recent years has had a major impact on the world in which we live. It has created new industries and influenced developments in areas such as television, computer games, medicine, simulator technology, advertising and marketing. This degree is intended to provide a broad education in the creative use of computer graphics technology. This includes computer animation, character animation, 2D graphics and virtual reality.

The course is offered in either full-time or sandwich mode. Students may elect to spend their third year in industry, placed with a company active in computer graphics. Current placements include film and TV graphics companies, games companies, education and companies working in the rapidly growing world of the Internet.

The first year of the course includes creative design, animation, the Internet, multimedia and communication skills. The second year has core modules based around creative digital imaging, computer animation and character animation. There are option modules on games design, animation, the World Wide Web and multimedia.

The final year includes a major individual visualisation project, which is assessed via a thesis and viva. A range of option modules covers post-production, advanced character animation, photo-realistic computer animation, creative VR and human computer interaction.

The School has excellent facilities that match the industry standard, including high-end Linux and Windows workstations running packages such as Softimage|XSI, Alias|Wavefront Maya, Combustion, USAnimation Opus, 3D Studio Max, Premiere and Photoshop; alongside other high-end video equipment. In addition to a strong commitment to the visualisation subject area, Teesside has established a growing reputation in this creative field, supported by investment in a new digital TV studio and editing suite and an impressive VR Centre and Hemispherium.

Students may choose to spend a year in industry after their second year or opt to continue immediately with their final year options.

Course Structure and Content

Full time undergraduate degrees are taught over three years at the university, plus perhaps, a "sandwich" year in industry after the second year.

These are the modules you could expect to study on this course. The modules you can choose in your Second and Final years will depend on those you have studied in preceeding years. Also, some second and final year modules may be changed or restructured in order to keep the course up to date with latest trends in the industry.
