The development of computer graphics technology over recent years has had a major impact on the world in which we live. It has created new industries and influenced developments in areas such as television, computer games; medicine, simulator technology, advertising and marketing.
This degree provides an extensive education in all major aspects of computer graphics, from the technical aspects of graphics programming and the underlying mathematics, to creative computer animation and special effects.
The first year of the course comprises fundamental material covering mathematics, programming, creative design, the Internet and communication skills, with options in animation and games-related modules.
The second year has core modules based on graphical mathematics and graphics programming, where students learn the principles of surface modelling, illumination, 3D viewing, texturing and ray tracing. This material underpins work on real-time and pre-rendered graphics and games programming. A wide range of option modules is also available.
The final year includes a major individual visualisation project. A range of option modules covers advanced graphics programming, advanced visual simulation plus games physics and AI, as well as creative subjects such as advanced character animation, photo-realistic computer animation and post-production.
The School has a very strong commitment to the visualisation subject area and has established a very strong and growing reputation in this field. This is based on teaching backed by active research and the excellent quality of students' work.
Students may elect to spend their third year in industry, placed with a company active in computer graphics. Current placements include film and TV graphics companies, games companies, education and companies working in the rapidly growing world of the Internet.
Full time undergraduate degrees are taught over three years at the university, plus perhaps, a "sandwich" year in industry after the second year.
These are the modules you could expect to study on this course. The modules you can choose in your Second and Final years will depend on those you have studied in preceeding years. Also, some second and final year modules may be changed or restructured in order to keep the course up to date with latest trends in the industry.
