This course is very much geared towards the requirements of today's IT specialist and covers traditional topics of databases and spreadsheets as well as the developing applications for the World Wide Web.
Through their options, students are able to tailor their course in a programming, applications or business setting.
Though the course is vocational with a strong practical emphasis, underpinning theory and principles are also covered so that students can keep up to date with and understand the ever-changing world of IT.
Prior knowledge of computing, although helpful, is not essential.
Students can choose to take an elective (an optional extra module) to broaden their studies or to prepare for subsequent progression to a degree course. Taking an elective can increase option choice in subsequent semesters.
By taking particular elective or option modules, students who complete the HND successfully may progress straight on to the second year of the BSc(Hons) degrees in Business Computing, Information Technology or IT and Networks or the final year of BSc (Hons) Computer Studies.
The overriding consideration when admitting students is whether they are likely to succeed on the course. In particular, mature students (over 21) may be exempt from the standard entry requirements. All prospective students are welcome to speak to an admissions tutor about their qualifications and which course is most likely to suit them.
