This module will provide a theoretical basis to the practical nature of this subject, using Case Studies to describe specific problems associated with database design, development, deployment, migration and conversion of legacy databases.

Students will develop further practical skills in data modelling and database design and will apply these skills to the development of database applications. They will also gain a broader understanding of database management system software tools and techniques.

The module will also consider the potential impact of database technologies and applications, both those currently in use and those being researched.

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to

• Accurately model real world database applications using conceptual / logical data modelling techniques.
• Implement a physical data model (schema) from a conceptual / logical model using standard DBMS tools and languages (e.g. SQL).
• Implement selected business rules using standard database programming language techniques (e.g. stored procedures and triggers).
• Represent and manipulate databases associated with multiple media data and graphics, especially web based information systems and services.

Assessment will be by examination.

Database Systems is a pre-requisite for this module.
