This module continues to develop the student's understanding of networking in a business environment.

The module examines in detail the design issues of network protocols and explores the selection and use of appropriate protocols in modern commercial networks.

Students study networks with an emphasis on availability of resources. Factors affecting the performance of a network, from the users to technical and legal issues, will also be considered. Performance monitoring is covered within the context of both network and business requirements.

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to

• Design computer networks to meet specific functional and performance objectives.
• Evaluate the performance of computer networks to specific functional objectives.
• Appraise a range of advanced network protocols.
• Evaluate appropriate network performance parameters in a given context.

Assessment will be by examination.

Networks and Communications is a pre-requisite for this module.
