This module requires the student to Direct and Animate a creative animation, as a completed computer animation work. Different works may use different styles or follow different processes.
The student will produce a short original creative computer animation that tends to push the boundaries, where all creative and technical aspects of the work, including a soundtrack, are produced to a good professional standard at final year level.
Intended as a "first film" piece, the animation may be a showpiece for the student to pursue a creative role in the animation industry such as Animation Director, Creative Director, or Animator. The work should display a high quality of animation skills and use of state-of-the-art technology.
The animation may be character driven or non-character based, to allow for a wide parameter in choice of subject matter, styles, genres and techniques.
The work is to reflect contemporary practice and should be informed by seminal works in animation, narrative or experimental, as can be seen in professional high-end animations, comprising a wide range of genres and the implementation of various techniques.
A series of lectures and seminars including guest animation directors will provide students with inspiration and contextualisation.
Students will apply their computer animation skills and knowledge and make an informed choice to use either 2D or 3D state-of-the-art software, or to use an appropriate combination of software.
In order to achieve their ideas successfully and enhance their animation skills, students are encouraged to explore techniques that can be applied to computer animation in new and innovative ways, or experiment with 2D and 3D animation software.
Practical sessions will allow students to work in small groups with supervision and feedback.
