This module develops students' skills in the design and automation of industry standard database and spreadsheet application packages.

In the study of database applications, normalisation techniques will be introduced, leading to an understanding of relational databases. Some advanced database features such as macros will be studied, and experience gained in building IT solutions for solving business problems.

In the study of spreadsheet applications, automation techniques will be introduced, leading to an understanding of fluctuating criteria and the need to develop a flexible model. Some advanced spreadsheet features such as database facilities, controls and decision making tools will be studied and experience gained of developing application tools for solving practical problems.

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to

• Design a relational database using the prescribed data modelling technique.
• Demonstrate the use of forms and sub-forms for data input to a multi-table database, including the use of appropriate programming techniques to validate and format data.
• Apply the use of appropriate techniques to produce complex queries and reports for a multi-table database.
• Use some advanced spreadsheet features such as database facilities, controls and decision making tools.
• Demonstrate the use of appropriate programming techniques to record/amend a macro and create a button to trigger the macro.

Assessment of the module is split between a one hour laboratory test (40%) and a "take away" piece of work (60%).
