This module will introduce the student to music history, techniques and technology in the context of 'digital music' where the latter is taken to mean the use of computer hardware and software in the service of music and musicians.
The student will learn about mechanical, electromechanical, electronic devices and computer hardware & software in the generation of sound. Software, hardware, protocols, conversions and formats for the creation, synthesis, editing, recording, storage, distribution and replay of musical works will be discussed, demonstrated and explored.
Recording studio, project studio and desktop technology based upon computer hardware and software will be introduced and placed in the context of the production of musical works, or for use in film, animation, television, multimedia, games, virtual worlds and the web.
