This module introduces the student to the fundamentals of data communications, examining the characteristics of modern network transmission media.

The module introduces and explores modern computer network design concepts and associated performance issues. The functionality and services offered by network protocols are examined and applied to the delivery of specific network requirements.

Students will learn about the requirements of modern networking applications and how networks are designed and constructed to meet these requirements. They will also be introduced to concepts for building resilient, secure networks and factors that affect network performance and how to address these.

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to

• Evaluate recent developments in computer communications and networking.
• Design a Local Area Network using modern technologies and hardware.
• Use appropriate network measurement parameters to analyse network performance.
• Illustrate the significance of errors in data transmission across a computer network for specific network functions.
• Examine the mechanisms and limitations of data transmission in computer networks for a range of different media.
• Appraise the technologies used to develop Wide Area Networks and the Internet.

This module will be assessed by an examination.

This module must be studied in conjunction with Network and Systems Administration.
