This module aims to give the student a clear insight into the fundamental architecture and operation of digital computers.

The module reviews the basic configuration of current personal computer systems in terms of performance and fitness for use. There will also be an introduction to input/output devices and their interface with a computer system.

Particular emphasis is placed within the module on the representation, storage and manipulation of data in a digital computer in order to help the student in understanding high level programming techniques.

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to

• Identify the key components in connecting personal computer systems to a Local Area Network.
• Use the fundamental principles of digital logic and Boolean algebra to implement the basic building blocks of a digital computer.
• Identify the key actions that occur in the fetch-execute cycle of a simple microprocessor.
• Describe the memory hierarchy of a computer system and the devices used in its implementation.

The module will be assessed by an examination.
