Sound Production

Sound (including music) powerfully complements text and images, particularly the moving image. This module introduces students to music technology, computer software applications and production techniques that allow sound, sound effects, speech and music to be created, recorded, edited, manipulated, stored and played back correctly synchronised to video.

Students explore the way that analogue sound is captured, then stored and manipulated in the digital domain, synchronized with video, and returned to the analogue domain for playback.

The module gives a sufficient grounding in digital audio and the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) protocol to allow students to appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies in various production contexts.

Students will be guided in their exploration of the use of sound by interactive sound generation, sound clips and soundtracks associated with film, animation, television, video, games, virtual worlds, multimedia and the web.

Practical experience is gained of the production process, including microphone selection and placement, Foley work, working with speech, special effects and recording digital audio sound clips and MIDI controlled music sequences.

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to

Student achievement will be measured by In-Course Assessment wherein, for example, a supplied short animation/video will be furnished with a soundtrack.
