MSc Web Services Development

This course involves the design and development of online information systems using web services.

You will examine the role of web services and the design of service-oriented web applications. You will also take a web engineering approach to the study of web-based systems and components (objects) and in the implementation of technologies such as ASP.NET.

The design of the web interface is explored using integrated tools for multimedia development. And, you'll develop management skills for dealing with clients and end users.

You will cover web design methods and the development of web applications using ASP.NET. You will also gain experience of the latest software tools for developing web services and the multimedia skills for building web interfaces. You will develop your understanding and experience of research. The final stage will be devoted to your individual project.

Course Structure and Content

All courses start in the September of each year, and the year is divided into two parts.

The taught part has 6 modules, each worth 20 credits, delivered between September and May. The second part is where you undertake an individual project of research and development. This is assessed at the end of the year (September) by a presentation and written dissertation, and is worth 60 credits.

If you do not wish to complete all the taught modules or project, there are three intermediate awards you can achieve instead of the full award of MSc.

Assessment Methods

The modules comprising this degree are assessed by In Course Assessment. Some modules may require students to work in groups.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have one of the following:

  1. BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) degree, first or second class, with significant multimedia or computing content, but not a degree in a web development area; or
  2. equivalent qualifications, for example, mature applicants who have appropriate professional experience.

Overseas applicants whose first language is not English are also expected to provide evidence of their English Language ability, such as an IELTS score of at least 6.0. Details of these requirements can be found on the university web site.
