During this module you will learn about computer hardware, software, operating systems, electronic mail and electronic file management. The aim of the module is to provide a solid foundation for later, more advanced work. Consequently, the approach emphasizes the understanding and mastery of basic concepts, tools and skills.

Principles of Information Technology

Prerequisite: Introduction to IT

This module illustrates how to select software and hardware to solve business problems. Students learn how to evaluate client requirements and suggest what equipment or packages will meet their needs.

Introduction to Local Area Network Management

10 credits Level 1
Prerequisite: Introduction to IT

Learn how to specify, design, install and manage a Local Area Network and explore Client-Server software and Network Operating Systems.

Network Server Administration

10 credit Level 2
Prerequisite: Introduction to Local Area Network Management

This module explores the operation and management of industry standard Network Operating Systems (NOS) such as NetWare and Windows. The main focus will be on security and user management. You will learn how to oversee a complex network environment with Windows and NetWare servers using Microsoft Active Directory (AD) and Novell Directory Services (NDS) administration tools.

Advanced Local Area Network Management

10 credit Level 2
Prerequisite: Introduction to Local Area Network Management

This module takes a detailed look at the design and installation of Local Area Networks (LAN) wiring standards and ongoing monitoring of a LAN.

The module covers cabling, switching, routing and the installation of LAN hardware and Virtual LANS (VLANS). LAN protocols, addressing schemes and the concepts of network security, firewalls, power supply protection are also covered.

Wireless Networking

10 credits Level 2
Prerequisite: Introduction to Local Area Network Management

Wireless networking takes a look at the installation of wireless access points for a small office or home network and the importance of security measures on such a network. The module also considers the issues involved in connecting a small wireless network to the Internet and the ongoing management of the network.
