
Research degrees involve the supervised individual investigation and evaluation of an area of study. This culminates in a thesis on the research undertaken. The School of Computing offers research degrees in a range of different areas.
- computer graphics, visualisation and computer animation
- virtual environments (virtual and augmented reality)
- multimodal interfaces
- formal methods
- computer security (including access control)
- artificial intelligence (agent-based systems, applied artificial intelligence)
- design and development of interactive learning systems
- web engineering (including e-commerce and e-business)
- accessibility and special needs computing
Full-time or part-time research, in a range of disciplines, will lead to a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) award. The School has many links with local businesses.
An MPhil, MProf, PhD or DProf degree is awarded to students who, having investigated and evaluated an approved topic, have:
- shown an understanding of relevant research methods.
- demonstrated the knowledge, understanding, skills and abilities as specified in the approved descriptors and outcomes for the Masters and Doctoral level programmes
- and has satisfactorily presented and defended a thesis in oral examination.
- In addition, to achieve a PhD or D.Prof the work must show an independent and original contribution to knowledge.
